According to StreetEasy, telecom tycoon Carlos Slim, Mexico’s richest man and the former richest man in the world, has relisted his lavish New York City townhouse for $80 mιllιon.
Slim, also known as Carlos Slim Helú, listed the 20,000-square-foot Upper East Side property at 1009 Fifth Ave. for the same sum in 2015. According to StreetEasy records, that $80 mιllιon asking price was a city record at the time.
The townhouse would set a New York City record if it sells for eight figures. StreetEasy statistics shows Vincent Viola’s 2021 sale of 12 E. 69th St. for $59 mιllιon as the record.
For New York, it’s huge. StreetEasy also lists it as the largest townhouse for sale in the boroughs.
Slim, worth $90.7 billion, bought the limestone and red-brick property from late Russian oil magnate Tamir Sapir in 2010 for $44 mιllιon.
It was designed by Welch, Smith & Provot in the Italian Renaissance Palazzo style and built between 1899 and 1901. The listing calls it one of the remaining private Fifth Avenue homes facing Central Park.
The interiors have marble fireplaces, intricate moldings, a five-level grand staircase, and a skylight on the top floor. They span 27 feet along Fifth Avenue and 100 feet along 82nd Street“The building can be reimagined as a private residence or converted into a gallery, store, museum, or foundation given its prime location across the Met Museum,” the listing says.
The Slim family owns América Móvil, Latin America’s largest mobile communication company. He is self-made, the son of Catholic Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. He studied Civil Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (known by its Spanish abbreviation UNAM) School of Engineering.
