In a devastating blow to Ukraine’s military capabilities, recent reports reveal significant losses of critical military assets in the ongoing conflict with Russia. As of late March 2022, Ukrainian forces have suffered the loss of numerous aircraft, tanks, armored vehicles, and naval vessels, with evidence of destruction and capture mounting daily.
The Ukrainian Air Force has reported the loss of at least 12 MiG-29 fighter jets, alongside three Su-27s and four Su-25s, primarily due to relentless Russian air defenses. The first aircraft shot down during the invasion was an An-26 transport plane, tragically claiming five lives from its crew. On the ground, the situation is equally dire, with over 70 T-64 tanks confirmed lost, including significant numbers of T-72 and T-80 models. Armored fighting vehicles are not spared either, with more than 55 destroyed or captured, including various BMP and BRDM models.
The Ukrainian military’s self-propelled artillery units have also faced harsh realities, with multiple rocket launchers and artillery pieces reported abandoned or destroyed. In total, over 100 trucks and military vehicles have been lost, severely impacting logistical operations. The naval front is no better; the flagship frigate was scuttled to prevent Russian capture, while two gunboats and a patrol vessel have been reported captured.
As the conflict escalates, these losses highlight the urgent need for reinforcements and support for Ukrainian forces. The situation remains fluid, with every day bringing new challenges and casualties. Stay tuned for further updates as Ukraine continues to fight against overwhelming odds in this relentless war.
