Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel could soon make a sensational return to Red Bull Racing—but not behind the wheel. Instead, he’s being lined up for a senior management role, potentially succeeding Dr. Helmut Marko in leading the team’s young driver development programme.

Vettel, who won all four of his world titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, confirmed to Austrian broadcaster ORF that he has held discussions with the team about taking on a non-driving role, saying:

“There have been a few headlines now. I still get along very well with Helmut, and we are also in exchange on the subject. These are not yet so intense and in-depth, but it may be something where I can play a role — in what form, it will show.”

With Marko now 82 and having hinted at retirement multiple times, Red Bull is exploring long-term succession options. Vettel, now 37, is widely admired not only for his driving achievements but also for his leadership, values, and dedication to causes such as sustainability and mental health.

The team responded positively to Vettel’s potential involvement. A Red Bull spokesperson told Motorsport-Total:

“Sebastian will always be part of the Red Bull family. We are in regular dialogue and admire the clarity and passion he brings. His legacy with us is unmatched, and any future involvement would be welcomed with open arms.”

Max Verstappen, who grew up idolizing Vettel during his early karting days, also reacted to the news after hearing of the discussions during the Austrian GP media day.

“It would be amazing to have Seb back in the team, even in a different role,” Verstappen said. “He’s a legend here. I’ve always respected how he worked with engineers and brought everyone together. If he joins the program or takes on something bigger, we’ll all benefit.”

Verstappen added that Vettel’s return would also be a “boost for the younger generation.”

“He understands the pressure, the mindset, the technical side — and he truly cares about people. That’s rare. I’d love to have his experience around the paddock more often.”

While nothing is confirmed yet, Vettel’s return to Red Bull appears to be more than just rumor. With Helmut Marko expected to gradually step away, Vettel could soon play a crucial off-track role in shaping the future of Red Bull Racing and its next generation of stars.
