Scottie Scheffler was forced to get rid of Venmo account after earning millions

Scottie Scheffler is in fine form and is the heavy favorite to win the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club this week, which would see the world No. 1 claim his fourth major title

Scottie Scheffler revealed he was forced to close his Venmo account after sports bettors requested money back from him when he failed to win.

Scheffler has raked up enormous career earnings alongside having a “𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ish” financial agreement with his caddie. But a LIV Golf star’s latest $4 million win has left him and Rory McIlroy in the dust.

Earlier this month, at Muirfield Village Golf Club, Scheffler stormed to a dazzling victory at the Memorial. The world No. 1 carded a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish the Memorial at 10-under – four strokes ahead of second-place finisher Ben Griffin.

The dominant showing marked Scheffler’s seventh top-10 finish in a row and third win in his past four starts, as he previously emerged victorious at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and PGA Championship earlier this month. His win at Quail Hollow was Scheffler’s third career major title.

Scheffler, who has been raking in the prize winnings thanks to his stellar performances, is the overwhelming favorite to win the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Scheffler insisted he pays little attention to such labels, and suggested fans tried to reach out on his Venmo to claim back lost money placed on him in the past.

“I think everybody hears from fans whether they have a financial benefit or anything in their outcome,” Scheffler told reporters. “That’s why I had to get rid of my Venmo because I was either getting paid by people or people requesting me a bunch of money when I didn’t win. It wasn’t a good feeling.

“But no, I don’t pay attention to the favorite stuff or anything like that. Starting Thursday morning we’re at even par and it’s up to me to go out there and play against the golf course and see what I can do.”

When asked what was the most money anyone has ever sent him as a ‘thank you’ for their winning bet, Scheffler – who laughed after speaking – added: “I don’t remember the most that somebody would send me. Maybe a couple bucks here or there. That didn’t happen nearly as much as the requests did.”

Scheffler was in elite form last year when the U.S. Open rolled around. However, he was unable to keep pace with Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy at Pinehurst No. 2, with the LIV Golf star eventually pulling away.

Scheffler is on record pace. Only Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods have reached 16 wins quicker in their careers than the 28-year-old has.

The 28-year-old has never won the U.S. Open, although he has finished inside the top five in two of the last three editions of the tournament. When he tees off, Scheffler will certainly be the favorite to become a four-time major champion.

Should he hoist the trophy into the air come Sunday, Scheffler will be an Open Championship win away from joining McIlroy and becoming the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam. He tees off his 2025 U.S. Open challenge alongside Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland on Thursday, June 12.
