Erik ten Hag sets condition for Florian Wirtz to join Liverpool: “I want two players from Arne Slot”

As Liverpool edge closer to completing a British record-breaking deal for Florian Wirtz, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who remains influential in the German football scene due to his strong ties with Bayer Leverkusen, has reportedly intervened — making a shock demand involving two Liverpool players as part of the negotiation.

According to Mail Sport, Liverpool have tabled an offer worth £109 million for the 22-year-old midfielder, with further bonuses and clauses that could push the total package to £120 million. Wirtz, who has already made it clear that Anfield is his preferred destination, is expected to sign a long-term deal once final details are settled.

However, the Bundesliga champions are now exploring a player-swap component, with Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah emerging as potential makeweights. Both players are admired by Leverkusen, especially with their potential to grow under Xabi Alonso — or a possible successor like Erik ten Hag, should he make a move to Germany in the near future.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, Ten Hag was quoted saying: “If Liverpool want Wirtz, fine — but for a deal of that size, they must give something serious in return. I would take Elliott and Quansah from Arne Slot without hesitation. These are young, intelligent footballers who fit the Bundesliga perfectly.”

While Ten Hag is not officially tied to Leverkusen, sources suggest he has advised them during the Wirtz talks — a surprising move given his Premier League affiliation. Liverpool, however, appear open to negotiations if it means securing Wirtz ahead of Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the dramatic turn in the transfer saga on social media: “Florian Wirtz wants Liverpool, personal terms agreed. Talks ongoing between clubs — Leverkusen now considering including a player in the deal. Elliott and Quansah are appreciated by Leverkusen. Let’s see how talks progress.”

Both Elliott and Quansah had limited roles under Klopp in the 2024/25 season, with just six league starts between them, and may welcome a fresh challenge if first-team opportunities remain scarce at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are also finalising deals elsewhere: Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million and Giorgi Mamardashvili as a goalkeeping reinforcement. Caoimhin Kelleher is set to join Brentford for £18 million, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid has been completed for £8.4 million.

With Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz also expected to leave, Liverpool are undergoing a massive reshaping of the squad under Arne Slot — and landing Florian Wirtz would be the marquee move to usher in a bold new era at Anfield.
