Tommy Fleetwood, golf’s $28 million winless wonder, is in contention at the Charles Schwab Challenge and eyeing his first PGA Tour title after a strong opening round

Tommy Fleetwood has achieved an unusual and frustrating milestone in professional golf: he’s earned over $28 million on the PGA Tour without a single win, ranking 56th among eligible players.
It’s the most money ever made by a player without hoisting a trophy — an impressive and bittersweet stat that speaks to his consistency but also highlights the one thing missing from his resume. Yet that could change this week.
The 33-year-old Englishman is off to a strong start at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. He carded a 3-under-par 67 on Thursday at Colonial Country Club, putting himself within striking distance of the lead.
Fleetwood’s in a favorable position — and the timing couldn’t be better.
With many of golf’s biggest stars sitting out this week’s tournament, including Masters champion Rory McIlroy, Fleetwood is one of the most accomplished names in the field.
Only two players ranked in the top 10 in the world — Scottie Scheffler and Hideki Matsuyama — are competing. That gives Fleetwood a shot at finally breaking through.
Indeed, Colonial’s narrow, tree-lined layout plays to Fleetwood’s strengths. Known for his smooth swing and calm demeanor, Fleetwood has long been considered one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour.
Over the course of his PGA Tour career, Fleetwood has racked up 25 top-five finishes, including five second-place showings. He’s also won seven times on the DP World Tour, where he’s a fan favorite in Europe.
So far this season, Fleetwood has stayed in the mix without finding the winner’s circle. He’s made 12 cuts in 14 events and finished inside the top 20 eight times. He even played well at the Masters and PGA Championship, but not quite well enough to challenge for the title.
The Charles Schwab Challenge could offer the breakthrough moment he’s been chasing for years.

Scheffler, the world’s No. 1, remains the favorite. He’s coming off a dominant win at the PGA Championship and will be hard to beat even on a demanding course like Colonial.
But Scheffler has played a heavy schedule in recent weeks, and fatigue could be a factor.
That opens the door for someone like Fleetwood — experienced, hungry, and playing well.
Fans have rallied behind him, hoping he can finally turn his steady performances into a victory. And with fewer household names in the field, this might be his best chance yet.
If he’s right, this weekend in Texas could be the moment he finally changes the narrative—and erases one of golf’s most surprising records.
