Mohamed Salah reveals shocking detail after signing new Liverpool deal as $200 million offer is confirmed

Mohamed Salah has officially put an end to months of speculation by signing a new two-year contract with Liverpool, keeping him at Anfield until June 2027 — and in doing so, revealed a surprising detail involving a rejected $200 million transfer offer.

The Egyptian forward, now 32, is set to complete a full decade with the club if he honors the deal, after arriving from AS Roma in 2017. Liverpool confirmed the contract extension on the morning of April 11.

“Of course I’m very excited,” Salah told Liverpool’s official website. “I’ve played here for eight years and hopefully it will be 10. Like before, Liverpool has a great team. I signed the contract thinking that we can win more trophies and enjoy football together.”

The deal marks the conclusion of a tense negotiation period that nearly broke down at one stage. Liverpool were determined to keep their star man, but hesitant to offer a massive contract to a player many believed was nearing the twilight of his career. However, Salah’s phenomenal form this season — leading the Premier League Golden Boot race with 27 goals, six ahead of Erling Haaland — left the club with little choice.

Without an extension, Salah would have been free to leave on a free transfer in July. Several Saudi Pro League clubs had been preparing offers worth hundreds of millions of dollars in wages to lure the Muslim superstar to the Middle East. Liverpool, however, famously rejected a $200 million bid for Salah in August 2023 — an amount now officially confirmed following the new contract.

In his post-renewal interview, Salah also addressed the headline-making offer and why he ultimately turned it down.

“Yes, I knew about the offer,” Salah admitted. “It was a huge number, of course, but money is not everything. I still have goals to achieve here with Liverpool. I love this club, the fans, and the challenge of the Premier League. I felt my journey here was not finished.”

It’s a decision the club will feel vindicated in. Since arriving for just $55 million in 2017, Salah has become one of the greatest signings in Liverpool’s history. He has scored 243 goals and provided 111 assists in 394 appearances, helping the Reds win eight major trophies including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup (twice), UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Community Shield.

With Liverpool currently top of the Premier League table with 73 points from 31 matches — 11 ahead of second-place Arsenal — Salah could be on his way to adding a ninth major title to his cabinet.

Following Salah’s renewal, attention now turns to the futures of other Liverpool stars. Club captain Virgil Van Dijk is reportedly next in line for a contract extension, while right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold could leave on a free transfer, with Real Madrid monitoring his situation closely.
