Renowned actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, have been found dead at their Santa Fe home, as confirmed by local authorities. The couple, who were 95 and 64 years old respectively, were discovered alongside their dog on Wednesday, February 26. The Santa Fe New Mexican reported that Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated there was no immediate indication of foul play, although the cause of death has yet to be determined.
The couple was last seen together on March 28, 2024, enjoying lunch at Pappo Seafood Kitchen in Santa Fe, a city Hackman had called home since the 1980s. In the photograph taken that day, Hackman, using a walking stick, was seen tenderly holding onto Arakawa’s arm. Their public appearances were rare; the last notable event they attended together was the 2003 Golden Globes, where Hackman received the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for his contributions to entertainment.
Hackman, an Oscar-winning actor known for his roles in iconic films such as “The French Connection,” “Superman,” and “Unforgiven,” had retired from acting after starring in the 2004 comedy “Welcome to Mooseport.” He later expressed his contentment with his career in interviews, stating that he preferred to leave the industry on a high note rather than risk diminishing his legacy. Following his retirement, Hackman pursued painting, writing, and voiceover work, authoring several novels and documentaries.
He is survived by three 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren from his first marriage to Fay Malese. The news of Hackman and Arakawa’s passing has left fans and friends mourning the loss of a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, whose legacy will endure in the many memorable performances he delivered over his distinguished career.
