Rachel Zegler says ‘Snow White’ role was ‘honor of a lifetime’ after calling original film ‘weird’: ‘Huge Disney fan’

The fairest role of them all?

Rachel Zegler called the opportunity to play Snow White in Disney’s live-action remake of its animated classic “the honor of a lifetime,” despite criticisms she leveled against the original 1937 film that sparked relentless backlash against the young star.

Zegler, 23, discussed what it was like receiving the call about booking the role on Thursday’s episode of “Good Morning America.”

“It was the honor of a lifetime. I think every young person dreams about a phone call like that,” the “West Side Story” actress gushed. “This one is certainly extra special as a huge Disney fan.”

Zegler added, “To get to bring [Snow White] to life in such a unique way and such a special way, it’s just a beautiful opportunity, and I’m very honored.”

Asked about the “modern spin” she put on the character, the Golden Globe winner replied, “It’s all about bridging a classic to a modern age to bring it to these beautiful young people.

“Her superpower remains her heart, you know, that’s always been the core of this story. That’s always been the core of the Disney Company.”

The film, she said, is intended for both 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren and the “inner 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 in all of us.”

Zegler’s comments, made just one day before the film’s release, struck a starkly different tone than remarks she previously made about the original, which she’s labeled dated and “weird.”

“The original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so,” she said in an interview with “Extra” at the 2022 D23 Expo.

“There’s a big focus on her love story with the guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird,” she added of the animated film. “So we didn’t do that this time.”

Zegler went on to share that the remake would take “a different approach” to Snow White’s tale and is “really not about the love story at all.”

In 2022, the actress also told Entertainment Weekly that she was “scared of the original cartoon” and only “watched it once and then never picked it up again” until she was cast in the 2025 live-action version.

Zegler’s opinion of the original film wasn’t all she’s been slammed for, however. Her attacks on Donald Trump supporters and support for Palestine have drawn the ire from more conservative corners of the internet. Her views on the Israel-Hamas war also oppose those of her “Snow White” co-star, Israeli actress Gal Gadot, 39, who plays the Evil Queen.

The many controversies surrounding Zegler, Gadot and the film in general led Disney to scale back its premiere, much to the chagrin of some of its cast.

While both Gadot and Zegler attended the event, they did not do a Q&A or any press interviews.

“Snow White” hits theaters on Friday, March 21.
