Lando Norris set the pace in the first practice session of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Australian Grand Prix, delivering a stunning performance that saw him clock the fastest time of 1:17.252 for McLaren. The British driver finished 0.149 seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz, who impressed in his Williams debut, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took third.
Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time world champion, could only manage fifth place for Red Bull, trailing Norris by 0.444 seconds. The session wasn’t without drama, as rookie Oliver Bearman suffered a heavy crash at Turn 10, bringing out a red flag.
However, the spotlight was firmly on Norris, who, despite playing down McLaren’s pre-season chances, showcased his title credentials with a commanding performance. After the session, Norris didn’t hold back, sending a bold message to Verstappen:
“Max has had his time at the top, but this season is going to be different. I’m here to fight for the championship, and today was just the beginning.”
Norris’s statement adds fuel to what is shaping up to be a fierce rivalry this season, as the Brit aims for his maiden F1 title while Verstappen seeks his fifth consecutive crown.
With more practice sessions and qualifying still to come, all eyes will be on this brewing battle between Norris and Verstappen. The Australian Grand Prix is already proving to be a thrilling start to the 2025 season.
