Auston Matthews met renowned German physician known for advocating usage of drug banned in North America

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews traveled to Germany during his recovery from an upper-body injury. According to Steve Simmons of The Toronto Sun, Matthews sought treatment from Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. The German doctor is known for working with top athletes like Usain Bolt and for supporting the use of Actovegin, a drug banned in North America.

“(Dr. Hans-Wilhelm is known for) advocating the usage of the drug Actovegin… Actovegin is the same drug that famed Toronto healer Dr. Tony Galea was arrested for crossing the border with years ago.” Simmons wrote in December 1 column of The Toronto Sun.

Matthews returned to the lineup last Saturday after missing nine games. He contributed two assists in Toronto’s 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, logging 20:23 of ice time and winning 16 of 24 faceoffs. On Monday, he scored his sixth goal of the season in a 4-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks. Matthews had three shots and three hits in 19:43 of ice time.

Coach Craig Berube said Auston Matthews is not yet in full form but expects improvement as he practices more.

“It’s going to take a little time,” Berube said per The Star.com. “Practice time … which is going to be difficult with the schedule, but he’s working at it. He’ll get there. I’ve got no worries.”

Matthews also acknowledged needing time to regain game shape.

“Just try to get better, feel better each game,” Matthews said. “Just continue to get my legs back, the lungs back, and just get back in game shape.”

Despite this, Auston Matthews remains a key player for Toronto. He led the NHL with 69 goals last season and received the Leaf’s captaincy earlier this year. He has 5 goals and 8 assists, making 13 points in the 2024-25 season. His +4 rating reflects solid contributions on offense and defense.

Auston Matthews and Leafs dominated Blackhawks 4-1

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 at Scotiabank Arena on Monday. Auston Matthews scored the first goal at 15:35 of the first period after a pass from William Nylander. John Tavares made it 2-0 at 11:59 of the second period with a deflected shot.

Lukas Reichel scored for Chicago at 3:26 of the third period, reducing the lead to 2-1. Just 21 seconds later, Fraser Minten scored from the right circle, making it 3-1 after a smart setup. Matthew Knies added an empty-net goal at 18:15 to secure the win. Anthony Stolarz stopped 27 shots, and Toronto 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed all four Chicago power plays effectively.
