Caitlin Clark Surprises Des Moines Students with Selfies and School Supplies

As the new school year approaches, the excitement of back-to-school shopping took on a whole new meaning for 350 students in Des Moines. On Friday, Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark made a surprise appearance at North High School, where she not only provided essential school supplies but also shared memorable moments with the students.

Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts praised Clark, stating, “Caitlin Clark is not just a remarkable athlete; she embodies generosity. She understands the importance of giving back to the community and helping others succeed.” The event benefited 300 students from Des Moines Public Schools, as well as 50 students from affiliated schools, all chosen by school administrators.

The North High School gymnasium buzzed with excitement as students and their parents arrived to collect free supplies from the Caitlin Clark Foundation. However, the real surprise was the appearance of Clark herself. Mary Coffin, president of the Caitlin Clark Foundation, shared, “We kept it very secret because we wanted to ensure she could come without disappointing anyone. When she arrived, the joy was palpable. She interacted with the kids and even shot some hoops with them.”

This event was part of the foundation’s “Back to School Backpacks” initiative, which saw Nike donate backpacks filled with essential items like notebooks, pens, and pencils, all generously provided by Hy-Vee. Additionally, Gatorade contributed water bottles to keep students hydrated.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have access to a strong education and the resources necessary for success,” Clark said in a statement. “School supplies are critical for every student’s learning experience, and I am grateful to our sponsors for making this event a reality.”

The surprise visit from Clark was a highlight for many students, who not only received backpacks but also had the chance to take selfies with the basketball icon and shoot some hoops alongside her. “We were thrilled to welcome Caitlin to North High School and honored to partner with the Caitlin Clark Foundation in our mission to provide quality education to Des Moines students,” Roberts added.

The district is optimistic this partnership will continue beyond a one-time event. Phil Roeder, director of communications and public affairs, expressed excitement about the foundation’s involvement, stating, “Beginning our relationship with the Caitlin Clark Foundation has been rewarding. We believe this is just the start of a long-lasting and fruitful partnership for our community’s youth.”

What is the Caitlin Clark Foundation?

The Caitlin Clark Foundation focuses on three key areas: education, nutrition, and sports. Clark believes these elements have significantly contributed to her success and is dedicated to supporting Iowa youth through various initiatives.

The foundation aims to provide food, clothing, sports equipment, and other essential resources to young people. Through educational programs, sports camps, food drives, and community outreach efforts, the foundation seeks to make a meaningful impact on the lives of youth.

Noteworthy initiatives include Operation Stock Up with the Coralville Community Food Pantry, Operation Boot and Gear Up with the Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa, and Operation Fuel Up with Hy-Vee. Clark’s commitment to empowering young people both on and off the field underscores the foundation’s mission to cultivate excellence in future generations.
