Siya Kolisi’s saga ends as Springboks captain completes transfer after feeling like he ‘stole’ from Racing 92

The Sharks have confirmed the signing of Siya Kolisi for the 2024/25 season after the Springboks skipper ended his stint in France.

On Sunday, it was announced that the Springboks great had agreed a mutual termination of his contract at Racing 92.

That opened up the chance for Kolisi to move back to South Africa, which was duly made official on Monday.

‘Celebrated across the globe’

Sharks director of rugby Neil Powell said: “Siya is an influential player, whose leadership and passion is known and celebrated across the globe.

“We are glad that he has chosen to return to Durban and don the black and white jersey once again.

“The positive influence he has on young players and the high standards that he sets for himself and those around him, is beneficial to any team he is part of. Off the field, the immense contribution that he makes can never be underestimated.”

“Siya is a much-loved sports personality who has the respect and love of all South Africans, and I am sure that everyone will join us in welcoming our national hero back home.”

Kolisi spent two years at the Sharks between 2021 and 2023 before he signed a lucrative three-year deal at Racing 92, joining the French club following the Rugby World Cup.

However, it did not work out and, after just one season, the Boks skipper has decided to head back to Durban.

“My family and I have enjoyed a wonderful year abroad that has given us cherished memories. We have missed South Africa though and it is time to come home,” the 33-year-old said.

“I would like to thank Racing 92 for accommodating my request to return home and for the exciting opportunity they gave me to play abroad. It is a great club steeped in tradition with an impressive group of players, who I can now call brothers for life.

“I am excited to be returning to Durban to re-join the Hollywoodbets Sharks. My family and I love Durban and its people, and I cannot wait to run out onto the park at Hollywoodbets Kings Park during the 2024/2025 rugby season.”

Owner’s outburst

It proved to be a difficult few months for Kolisi in Paris, with the Springboks great being criticised by Racing owner Jacky Lorenzetti after their Top 14 defeat to Bordeaux-Begles in June.

Whether Lorenzetti’s outburst played a part in the two-time World Cup winner’s decision is unclear, but he was happy with how his departure from the club was handled.

“We reached an agreement with the club. I am grateful for the way they handled the situation,” he told L’Equipe.
