Liverpool handed selection dilemma as Jurgen KIopp prepares to unleash three youngsters

A look at how Liverpool might line up when they entertain Leicester in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night

After making as many as 19 changes in his last two Liverpool matches, Jurgen Klopp may once more find his alterations being described as “wholesale” on Wednesday night.

The Reds get their Carabao Cup campaign underway against Champions League leaders Leicester City – perhaps the only club to be able to lay claim to having topped both the first and second divisions of English football in the last decade – and Klopp is expected to make at least a handful of changes to his team.

In goal, Caoimhin Kelleher will surely be brought back into the Liverpool team after his role in the 3-1 win over LASK in the Europa League last week. Klopp insisted that the cups were not necessarily going to lead to automatic minutes for the younger players in his squad given the strength in depth available to him this term but the Irish goalkeeper is no longer a young hopeful and is instead regarded as quality back-up.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the right-back slot. Joe Gomez was excellent against West Ham United on Sunday and with Tottenham Hotspur to come away from home on Saturday evening, Stefan Bajcetic might be asked to step in as Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to shake off a hamstring complaint.

The Spanish youth returned after six months out injured last week and a run-out in the cup might be just what the doctor has ordered for Bajcetic. The question is how he can adapt to the new ‘hybrid full-back’ position that is being utilised by Klopp and his staff.

In the centre, Jarell Quansah might find himself selected but just who Klopp names alongside the England Under-20 international is anyone’s guess. Will it be captain Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate or Joel Matip?

For various reasons each defender will have their own hopes of starting alongside Quansah. Club captain Van Dijk has not played too much in Liverpool red of late, while Konate needs minutes after his own fitness issues. Matip, however, will merely be aiming to put in another excellent shift after his shackling of Michail Antonio against West Ham.

It’s an intriguing dilemma and one that is a world away from the defensive problems he has encountered of late due to a mix of suspensions and injuries. Kostas Tsimikas will likely deputise for Andy Robertson on the left at least.

Wataru Endo will surely anchor the midfield as the Japan captain continues his gentle bedding in process. Harvey Elliott and Ryan Gravenberch may also feel they are in with a shout for game-time, although Bobby Clark might even be called upon if the manager has one eye on that trip to Spurs at the weekend. Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, one suspects, might all have watching briefs.

The massive positive for Klopp when it comes to his forward line this season is just how well stocked it is. Whereas a rest for his first-choice options in recent years usually led to a stark drop-off in quality, there doesn’t feel like an indisputable front three at present, meaning Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota might reasonably be expected to start alongside fledgling Ben Doak.

Mo Salah, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez can all rest up, should they be needed against Enzo Maresca’s Foxes. It’s the array of firepower that gives Liverpool the chance to go far in a competition they are looking to win for a record 10th time.

It’s quite the conundrum to have for Klopp as he goes in search of League Cup history this term.
