The 32-year-old moved to the red side of Merseyside from Schalke 04 in the summer of 2016, making this his seventh season with the club.
Matip has won six championships with Liverpool, including the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Champions League, in 190 career games.
Despite this, Matip is no longer a first-team regular under manager Jurgen Klopp and has less than a year left on his contract at Anfield.
The Cameroonian international only got the nod in the starting lineup for 16 games across all competitions in 2017–18, and he sat out Liverpool’s first two Premier League games this season before being called back up to replace Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
But Matip has said that players “don’t just walk away” from Liverpool, suggesting that he could be willing to sign a long-term contract with the Reds if offered.
Along with midfielder Thiago Alcantara and backup goalkeeper Adrian, Matip is one of three Liverpool players whose current contracts will expire in June 2024.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Matip remarked in an interview for Sky Germany, “As a Schalke supporter it was a great honor to play there. Of course, Schalke was my youth club. I had that chance for a long time, and you don’t turn it down in Liverpool, not with these kinds of conditions.
In addition, I have a deep sense of personal security here. It’s not ideal, in my opinion, to always be joining new groups. However, the ultimate decision rests with each individual. Regardless, I appreciate regularity.
I’ve reached the point in my life when I try not to worry too much about what lies ahead. I don’t plan too far ahead, preferring instead to make the most of each day as it comes. I’d be content if it came down to just these two teams. But in football, there are always unexpecteԀ outcomes.
When asked about Liverpool’s impressive start to the season, Matip said, “We are still at the beginning of the season.” Liverpool now sits in third place in the Premier League with 13 points out of a possible 15. We’re relieved the findings are accurate, of course.
It’s remarkable how quickly and well the new players have integrated into the team’s culture. We’re now attempting to collaborate for future success.
You can never foresee the Premier League because there is always so much money at stake. However, we are incredibly talented and always play to win.
The final outcome is always a mystеry. We’re focusing on ourselves right now and trying to win every game. The season should finish well if this is consistently effective.
As the Europa League group stage begins on the road against Austrian club LASK Linz on Thursday, Matip will compete with Van Dijk, Konate, Joe Gomez, and youngster Jarell Quansah for a starting spot at center defense.
