One of the world’s oldest elephants, Tricia, dies age 65 in an Australian zoo as Mark McGowan remembers the animal for her ‘stature and grace’ in a moving eulogy

Perth Zoo is mourning the death of Tricia, who at 65 years was believed to be one of the oldest elephants in the world.

The Asian elephant was a major attraction at the zoo for the past six decades and described as an ‘icon’ of Western Australia by Premier Mark McGowan.

Since her arrival at Perth Zoo in 1963 from Vietnam, she helped generations develop an appreciation for elephants and wildlife conservation.

She is being remembered for her cheeky and loving nature, instantly capturing the hearts of anyone who took the time to come and see her.

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan shared a statement paying tribute to Tricia.

‘Tonight, Western Australia farewells an icon… For many WA families, including my own, Tricia was a household name.’

‘Her stature and her grace were compelling,’ Mr McGowan added.

‘Tricia’s health and welfare had been monitored closely for some time by veterinarians and her dedicated elephant keepers, but her health status recently deteriorated as evidenced by her lack of sleep and mobility issues.

‘I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the staff at Perth Zoo who have been humanely caring for Tricia for so many years, and who ensured she was as comfortable as possible in her final moments.’

Steven Edmunds, senior elephant keeper at Perth Zoo, described it as ‘an honour and a privilege to have known Tricia’.

‘I have seen many people, over the years, break down in tears during behind-the-scenes experiences, absolutely overwhelmed by her presence,’ Mr Edmunds added.

In her honour, Perth Zoo have set up the Tricia Tribute to Conservation Fund.

People are being encouraged to donate to the fund instead of sending through flowers to express their condolences.

In Tricia’s memory, a special Memorial Walk will open on Sunday at Perth Zoo.

Visitors will be able to pay their respects and learn more about Tricia’s incredible life and legacy, while doing one of her favourite activities – walking through the zoo.

Half of the amount from all ticket sales will also go directly to Tricia’s Fund.

‘Your donation will contribute towards establishing a Elephant Ranger Guard Post in Tricia’s name for Wildlife Protection Units watching over elephants in the Bukit Tigapuluh eco-system in Sumatra,’ the zoo informed in a statement.

‘These units monitor and protect one of the last remaining Sumatran Elephant populations in the wild.

‘Remaining funds will be directed to the care and welfare of more than 1,500 animals at Perth Zoo, Tricia’s neighbours.

‘This is a sad time for the Zoo family, but your love and support is greatly appreciated.’
