Avengers directors Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed that Tony Stark’s final line in Endgame was not in the original script and in fact called for Robert Downey Jr to return to set and shoot a whole new scene.

At the end of Endgame, Doctor Strange’s one winning outcome plays out when Thanos places the Infinity Gauntlet back on his hand, reminds the Avengers ‘I am inevitable’ and snaps his fingers.

But Strange has twisted reality and the gauntlet is not real, with Tony instead wearing the glove, quipping ‘I am Iron Man’ and turning Thanos and his crew of baddies to dust.

His use of the gauntlet though proves deadly, as Tony is in fact human despite his Iron Man suit.

However the Russo brothers have revealed that in the original script of the final battle scene, Tony didn’t say a single word before snapping his fingers.

‘Tony used to not say anything in that moment,’ they explained during a Q&A in Washington DC.

‘And we were in the editing room going, “he has to say something, this is a character who has lived and died by quips.” And we just couldn’t, we tried a million different last lines.

‘Thanos was saying, “I am inevitable.”

‘And our editor Jeff Ford, who’s been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said, “Why don’t we just go full circle with it and say, “I am Iron Man”.” And we’re like, “Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow”.’

‘I am Iron Man,’ is of course what Tony tells reporters at the end of 2008’s Iron Man.

It was the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the film that kickstarted 11 years of box office smashes and critical acclaim for the comic book films.
