Scottie Scheffler’s stand-in caddie chasing career-high payday at BMW Championship

After stepping in for Ted Scott, caddie Michael Cromie stands to make approximately $360,000 while on the bag for Scottie Scheffler should the American win the BMW Championship

Victory at Caves Valley in the BMW Championship for Scottie Scheffler this weekend could see his stand-in caddie, Michael Cromie, earn a bumper payday.

The world no.1, who was left frustrated on Saturday after being put on supervision for pace of play during the third round of action, it currently chasing his playing partner, Robert MacIntyre, who responded to a heckler at Caves Valley, heading into the final round. Scheffler sits at -12, four shots back from MacIntyre on -16. Ludvig Aberg is third on -10.

Prior to the tournament, it was confirmed Scheffler would be without his veteran caddie, Ted Scott, for the BMW Championship. Scott missed the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship due to a private family matter. Scott had been on the bag for all 17 of Scheffler’s PGA Tour wins, including his four major championship victories, two of which came this year at Quail Hollow and Portrush.

While Brad Payne stepped in for Scott, Scheffler opted to have Cromie alongside him for the BMW Championship. Usually on the bag for Chris Kirk, Cromie must have thought his season was over after the former missed out on a top 50 place in the FedEx Cup standings.

However, he now stands to make approximately $360,000 on the bag for Scheffler if the world no.1 can chase down MacIntyre on the final day at Caves Valley.

And with the prize money the same for the BMW Championship and The Sentry, which Kirk won back at the beginning of 2024, it is safe to assume Cromie will make at least equal to his highest ever career payday as a caddie should Scheffler win.

Speaking ahead of the tournament about Scott’s absence, Scheffler said: “I think Ted’s where he needs to be right now and I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be.”

Scheffler added of Cromie: “Ted’s good buddies with [Cromie].

“I always liked him. He’s a young guy, works hard. Chris was very nice to let Cromie come work with me this week. He had a good finish to the season.

“He was a little bit on the outside looking in, but played really good and was close at the end. It was really nice of him to lend his caddie for the week.”

However, Scheffler will need to overcome a motivated MacIntyre, who is under no illusions that the crowd in Maryland will be rooting for the former, especially in a Ryder Cup year.

“We’re in America, playing against their sweetheart Scottie, who I get on well with, he’s a great guy,” MacIntyre said via BBC Sport, referencing his altercation with the heckler.

“I expected it today and I expect it again tomorrow. You give me c—, I’ll give you c— back. I’m not scared of that.”

He added: “I don’t know if anyone was thrown out, but there was plenty of people to talk to. He [a spectator] was just jeering. He was just shouting I missed it, he’s pushed it. Pushed it right in the middle of the hole, I guess.”
