Formula 1 fans were left buzzing after yet another explosive chapter in the Max Verstappen–Lewis Hamilton rivalry unfolded at the Hungarian Grand Prix. While their on-track clash turned heads, it was Verstappen’s post-race remarks — and his anger over the stewards’ handling of the incident — that truly ignited controversy.
“I Just Scared Him Off”
During a high-stakes battle for position on lap 32, Hamilton attempted an aggressive move to overtake Verstappen on the inside of Turn 2. Verstappen, holding his line firmly, left minimal space — and Hamilton was forced to run wide off the track to avoid contact.
Speaking candidly after the race, Verstappen gave his interpretation of the moment:
“Honestly, I think I just scared him off. He didn’t want to risk it and backed out. That’s racing. If he thought he could take the position, he should’ve committed harder.”
The Dutch driver appeared unfazed by the incident itself but was far less forgiving of what happened next.
Verstappen Slams Stewards’ Delay
What truly frustrated Verstappen wasn’t the clash with Hamilton — it was the stewards’ decision to investigate the incident after the race, rather than during it.
“I don’t get it,” Verstappen said. “We’re in the middle of a battle, and I have no idea whether I’m being investigated. It affects how we race, how we manage the car, everything. If they think something’s wrong, look at it immediately. Don’t wait.”
He argued that the uncertainty created by post-race investigations puts drivers at a disadvantage and disrupts the flow of competition.
No Penalty Issued — But Debate Continues
In the end, the FIA confirmed no penalty would be issued, ruling the incident a “racing incident.” Still, fans and analysts are split. Some believe Verstappen’s move was aggressive but fair, while others argue that Hamilton was forced off track unfairly.
Hamilton, for his part, was measured in his response:
“We fought hard. That’s what people come to see. I’m not here to complain — I’m here to race.”
Rivalry Heating Up
The Hungarian Grand Prix marks another flare-up in what is arguably the most intense rivalry in modern Formula 1. With the championship standings razor-close and emotions running high, every wheel-to-wheel duel between Verstappen and Hamilton feels like a powder keg waiting to explode.
Next stop: Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix — and with tensions rising, fans can expect more fireworks on and off the track.
