Max Verstappen Gives Honest Verdict on FIA Brake Investigation: Is Something Unusual Going On?

Max Verstappen has weighed in on the FIA’s recent investigation into McLaren’s rear braking system, following McLaren’s dominant 1-2 finish at the Miami Grand Prix. The FIA’s usual post-race checks were intensified this time as McLaren’s MCL39 was singled out for an in-depth examination of its rear brakes — an area that has sparked curiosity and concern among rival teams.

As part of its routine, the FIA randomly selects one of the top 10 finishers for an extensive technical inspection beyond the standard post-race scrutineering. In Miami, McLaren’s car was chosen, although it remains unclear whether it was Lando Norris’ or Oscar Piastri’s machine.

The investigation focused on the rear braking system, which has been under the spotlight due to McLaren’s remarkable ability to manage tyre temperatures — a factor that many believe has contributed to their recent surge in form. Reports suggest that rival teams, including Red Bull, have raised concerns to the FIA, with some even providing thermal imaging data showing McLaren’s brakes operating at significantly cooler temperatures compared to competitors.

Despite the intense scrutiny, no official report has been made to the stewards, indicating that the FIA has not uncovered any regulatory breaches. The final results of the inspection are expected to be announced ahead of next week’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen, speaking candidly after the Miami GP, offered his take on the situation. “To be honest, I don’t think they are doing anything illegal,” Verstappen said. “But there’s definitely something interesting going on with their brakes. You don’t get that kind of tyre management without something special. I trust the FIA will check everything properly, but it’s clear McLaren has found something that works really well.”

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella praised the team’s engineering brilliance, crediting the technical innovations for McLaren’s commanding performance. While the paddock awaits the FIA’s final word, it’s clear that McLaren’s breakthrough has sparked intrigue — and perhaps a little unease — among its rivals.

As the championship battle heats up, all eyes will be on whether the FIA’s investigation confirms the legality of McLaren’s impressive rear brake system, or if further measures will follow.
