The laws of the game state that when a defender deliberately plays the ball, even if unsuccessfully, it resets the offside phase.”

He further elaborated: “Tarkowski attempted to intercept and played the ball, which meant Diaz was no longer considered offside when he regained possession and assisted Jota. The VAR officials carefully reviewed the footage, and given that all aspects aligned with the current interpretation of the law, the goal was correctly awarded.”
