The PGA Tour isn’t giving up on the changes they announced, all with the aim of improving the product and attracting even more attention to this Tour. Since the arrival of LIV Golf, the leaders of the Tour have experimented a lot, brought new things to the golf scene, and introduced changes.
Judging by the reaction of the audience, some of these changes are positive, while some didn’t cause particularly positive reactions. The change that attracted the most attention was the introduction of smaller fields. The golfers aren’t happy with that, just like the fans, but it is obvious that the Tour leaders’ wishes are different.
One of the changes that golfers want is the freedom for golfers to play in shorts. Currently, PGA Tour players must perform wearing trousers, regardless of weather conditions. Big stars of this sport, such as Tiger Woods, tried to voice their desire to play in shorts, but didn’t receive a positive response.
Six years ago, Tiger Woods admitted that such an option seems positive to him, especially since they play in some of the hottest places on the planet. Tiger Woods points out that golfers mostly play in such conditions, given that many tournaments are in the summer.
“I would love it. We play in some of the hottest climates on the planet.
We usually travel with the sun, and a lot of our events are in the summer, and then on top of that when we have winter months here, a lot of the guys will go down to South Africa and Australia where it’s summer down there.”- Woods said, as quoted by MIRROR.
Tiger Woods is a golfer whose word is very important on the golf scene, but it is obvious that the leaders of the PGA Tour don’t want to make such radical changes, wanting golf to remain partly traditional. LIV Golf, on the other hand, operates in a different way, wanting golf to experience huge changes. Such a philosophy is not exactly what many golfers want.
“A lot of the tournaments are based right around the equator, so we play in some of the hottest places on the planet. It would be nice to wear shorts. Even with my little chicken legs, I still would like to wear shorts.”- Woods continued.

They allowed golfers to wear shorts in competitions, which caused positive reactions from many, such as Brooks Koepka, a popular name in the golf scene. Koepka had the opportunity to play on the PGA Tour, but by coming to LIV Golf, he discovered another side of golf, which suits him for now. PGA Tour leaders have said many times so far that they are open to changes and initiatives by golfers if such recommendations can increase the entertainment factor and maintain what is the essence of golf.
Golf attire is an interesting topic if we look at this sport from the very beginning, and for such a thing we have to go back years and years. Namely, during the very beginning, the dress code was completely different, stricter, and more professional. Golfers had to wear dress shirts, ties, and jackets.
However, many things have changed over the years, and with the popularity of this sport, dress codes have become different. Playing today on some golf courses, golfers can wear very casual and comfortable attire, including shorts. Of course, this is not the word when it comes to the PGA Tour.
It is important to mention that dressing on the golf course also means that your clothes improve your performance on the course, with materials that protect against UV rays, and with moisture-wicking materials. There are many factors at play when it comes to dressing.
Golf fans reacted
Golf fans, especially the older ones, still support traditional dress on golf courses, considering that it is part of the history of golf, and they think that it is unnecessary to change such rules at all. This is one of the reasons why many are against LIV Golf, considering that LIV Golf wanted to spoil what was the essence of golf years ago.
Many golfers like Woods were upset, thinking that wearing shorts would improve their game, stressing that they would have greater flexibility and range of motions during swings. In addition, they would feel more relaxed, especially when it comes to high temperatures outside.
We’ll see what the future will bring when it comes to things like this, and whether the world of golf will really experience huge changes. We have no doubt that a lot will change.
