During a preseason game between the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings, a scuffle broke out between Sens forward Zack MacEwen and Red Wings defensemen Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot.

The incident occurred in the first period after the Senators’ Jan Jenik tried to stir things up with Chiarot near the net.

MacEwen then came in and attempted to mix it up with Seider and Chiarot. This led veteran Austin Watson, who is with the Red Wings on a professional tryout, to rush in and defend his teammates.

A brawl ensued with Watson receiving multiple penalties – instigator, fighting, misconduct and a game misconduct. This resulted in Ottawa getting a 7-minute power play. MacEwen also received a misconduct penalty while Jenik was called for slashing.

Despite having to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 off so much time shorthanded, Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde appreciated Watson stepping up for his teammates. He said:

“I think it energized our guys.Mo’s a very important player for us, we don’t want him to get into any of those type of situations. I liked it a lot. It’s amazing just one guy with that mentality, it helps the group out a ton.” Lalonde said post-game.

Detroit lost the game 4-3 in overtime despite playing down a man for an extended time.
