Liverpool FC’s Kostas Tsimikas Set to Sign New Contract Until 2027
Liverpool FC is set to secure the services of defender Kostas Tsimikas for an extended period, as the player is reportedly close to signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2027. Tsimikas’ current deal runs until 2025, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is eager to retain the 27-year-old, who is highly valued despite not being a regular starter.
Tsimikas joined Liverpool from Olympiacos in 2020 for a fee of just under £12 million. Since then, he has made 62 appearances for the club, with 35 of them coming in the Premier League. Although Andy Robertson remains the first-choice left-back, Tsimikas has shown great form whenever given the opportunity to shine.
In the current season, Tsimikas has only played four minutes as a late substitute in the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. Despite his limited game time, the Greek international is said to be settled in Merseyside and was delighted to agree on a contract extension. Talks have progressed swiftly, indicating the player’s commitment to Liverpool.
During his time with Liverpool, Tsimikas has recorded 12 assists and was part of the squad that came close to winning the quadruple in the 2021/22 season. The team narrowly missed out on the league title to Manchester City and lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid. However, they did secure the FA Cup and League Cup double, with Tsimikas notably scoring the winning penalty in the shootout victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
Currently on international duty with Greece, Tsimikas started in their 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier. However, he will have the opportunity to help his country bounce back when they host Gibraltar on Sunday. Tsimikas could then feature for Liverpool in their upcoming match against Wolves on September 16th.
The potential contract extension for Tsimikas is a testament to his value to the Liverpool squad. Despite not being a regular starter, Klopp recognizes his contributions and wants to ensure his long-term presence at the club. This move also highlights Liverpool’s commitment to building a strong and deep squad capable of challenging for titles on multiple fronts.
