PGA Tour star has savage response for ‘expert’ who predicted his downfall

Chris Gotterup is playing some of the best golf of his career, and his run continued when back in the United States last weekend after impressing at the 3M Open

Chris Gotterup was quick to hit back at claims that last week’s 3M Open venue at TPC Twin Cities would not suit his game after another impressive showing on the PGA Tour.

Gotterup is a man in form, having won the Scottish Open early this month, before putting in another strong showing at The Open Championship. He put in his best major performance to date at Royal Portrush, finishing third, five shots behind Champion Golfer of the Year Scottie Scheffler.

After a successful stint in the United Kingdom, Gotterup made a return to American soil, teeing it up at the 3M Open, where Kurt Kitayama was crowned champion on Sunday.

Gotterup also enjoyed a good week, banking yet another top-10 finish, finishing five back of Kitayama. In the build-up, an expert piece by Golf Digest suggested that the 26-year-old would struggle to maintain his form while playing at TPC Twin Cities.

On the back of his showing, he was quick to go back to the claim, tweeting: “What classifies as ‘expert?'” before Golf Digest’s X account went on to congratulate the University of Oklahoma graduate for his performance in Blaine, Minnesota.

Prior to last week’s tournament, Gotterup finally took some time to reflect on a successful two weeks over in Scotland and Northern Ireland. “Obviously it’s been amazing the last couple weeks,” he explained.

“Honestly, probably a blessing in disguise with this weather today for me to just take another day to relax and get ready for this week.”

Of the reaction he received, the 26-year-old added: “Just like seeing how many people were following along and all the texts I got, just how, you know, from my family to high school to college to, you know, friends of friends and everyone’s kind of following along, which makes it really cool.

“Just to know that I have people at home that are following along means I’m doing something good and that I have people behind me.”

Gotterup’s recent run of form has put him right into contention to make his debut at the Ryder Cup for the United States in September.

Addressing his Ryder Cup chances on the back of his career-best major finish, he explained in Northern Ireland: “I haven’t thought about it at all. I mean, it really wasn’t ever on my radar. I obviously hoped to play well, and it would be a miracle. Now I mean, I have no idea. Northeast is my home, and we’ll see what happens.”

Gotterup currently finds himself 20th in the U.S. team rankings, with the top six automatically qualifying for the team later this month.

Captain Keegan Bradley will then complete his team with six wildcard picks.
