Winnipeg Jets captain Adam Lowry showed off his tough side by taking on Tyler Kleven during the first period of the Jets-Senators game on Wednesday night.

The brawl followed Kleven’s huge hit on Mason Appleton along the boards while chasing the puck in the Ottawa zone. Lowry took exception to the hit and engaged Kleven in defense of his teammate.

Here’s a look at the haymakers Lowry sent Kleven’s way:

The Jets’ captain got a clear victory in the bout, as he tackled the Ottawa Senators player to the ice. The officials broke up the brouhaha, sending both combatants to the penalty box.

In the meantime, Adam Lowry’s gutsy actions earned him big cheers from Winnipeg Jets fans inside Canadian Tire Centre, and stick taps from his teammates on the bench.

Tyler Kleven leaves game following bout with Adam Lowry

Following his heavyweight tilt with Adam Lowry, Tyler Kleven did not return to the ice for the Ottawa Senators. He served his major penalty for fighting but did not play for the remainder of the first period.

The Senators then announced that Kleven would not return to the game in the second period, leaving the Sens minus a defenseman. Ottawa had lined up seven blue liners for the game against the Winnipeg Jets, amid the rash of injuries.

However, Kleven’s injury left the Sens down to six defensemen and 11 forwards. All told, Kleven played 2:25 in the game and did not register a point. He hit the ice for five total shifts, including his has in which his hit on Mason Appleton led to the confrontation with Lowry.

It’s unclear whether Kleven’s injury was related to the bout with Adam Lowry. The Senators announced that it was a lower-body ailment but did not provide further details. In all likelihood, he will be evaluated on Thursday.

With the Senators already down captain Brady Tkachuk and forwards Josh Norris and Shane Pinto, losing Tyler Kleven adds to the need for more healthy bodies in the Senators’ lineup. If he goes on IR, the team will likely call up someone from the AHL to take his spot as the seventh defenseman.

In the meantime, the depleted Senators lineup lost 4-1 to the Jets on Wednesday night. The loss extended the club’s losing streak to five games. The Sens will look to snap the skid when they take on the San Jose Sharks next at home on Saturday night.
