Michael Del Zotto called NHL broadcast training camp a “no-brainer” for former players

In July 2024, former NHL players attended the first NHL Broadcast Training Camp in Manhattan. Among them were retired Vancouver Canucks players Ryan Kesler and Michael Del Zotto. The camp focused on helping players learn s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁s for broadcasting careers, with sessions on game prep, studio work and social media.

Well-known broadcasters like Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk provided training and guidance. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly noted the camp’s importance in helping players prepare for life after hockey.

“We went to our clubs, and we looked for candidates, players who may want to transition into broadcasting hockey as one avenue of kind of post-career opportunity.”As part of a broader umbrella for us of providing player development resources, so players can start thinking about life off the ice and what follows their hockey careers,” Bill Daly said via (NHL.com on July 25, 2024).

Kesler hopes to follow in the footsteps of Kevin Bieksa, his former teammate, who has found success in broadcasting.

Other attendees included Garnet Hathaway and Erik Johnson. Del Zotto spoke highly of the experience, calling it a “no-brainer” for ex-players interested in media. He urged other former teammates to take this opportunity to learn and think about their future careers.

“I’d say it’s a no-brainer,” Zotto said. “It’s a positive experience. They should get here. It’s a great learning experience.”

The camp is a valuable step for players to plan their lives beyond the ice.
